Hygiene and Teeth Cleaning Dental Services
A professional teeth cleaning is an important part of good dental hygiene, in addition to daily brushing and flossing. Regular cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that you are unable to remove yourself, even with excellent dental hygiene, and provide an opportunity for a dental checkup to ensure everything is healthy.
Our dental hygienists provide dental hygiene services, while our dentist provides the checkup to see if you have good oral health and diagnose any issues as soon as possible.
The Benefits of Dental Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings offer a wide range of benefits that go beyond just a brighter smile, although many patients appreciate the look and feel of their teeth after a professional teeth cleaning.
Prevention of Tooth Decay and Gum Disease
Teeth cleanings are a critical tool to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health concerns. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, which allow bacteria to sit on your teeth, causing a range of issues.
With a teeth cleaning, the plaque and tartar is removed to reduce the risk of cavities caused by acids produced by the bacteria, so teeth remain strong. Additionally, cleanings prevent bacteria-caused gum inflammation, or gingivitis, which is a precursor to a more advanced gum disease.
Bacteria and plaque are also associated with chronic bad breath, oral infections and sores, and other concerns, so a professional teeth cleaning will help prevent these issues, too.
Since cleanings can prevent gum disease, tooth decay and other issues, they then also reduce the likelihood of requiring more costly treatments, including root canal treatments, or tooth loss.
Comprehensive Examination and Screening for Early Diagnosis
During your cleaning appointment, we conduct a comprehensive examination, including gathering your medical history and completing radiographs and other diagnostics. This thorough assessment helps us diagnose cavities, assess gum health, examine your jaw and bite, and screen for oral cancer and other concerns.
This allows for issues to be identified early, for simpler, more cost-effective, and more successful treatment. In many cases, we can diagnose dental problems before you notice any symptoms.
The Dental Cleaning Process
Our dental cleanings are designed to leave your teeth and gums feeling fresh and healthy. Here's what you can expect your dental hygienist to do:
Surface Stains Removal
Surface stains on your teeth are polished away with polishing paste, leaving your teeth looking clean and shiny.
Plaque and Tartar Removal
Our dental hygienists remove the plaque and tartar, also known as calculus, on the surface of your teeth and below the gumline using dental hygiene tools. If it's been a while since your last cleaning, you may have noticed a rough surface on your teeth; this is tartar, which is removed during your teeth cleaning, so your teeth feel smooth again.
Flossing
Your hygienist will then floss all the spaces between your teeth to remove all debris.
Sensitivity
The elimination of tartar and plaque can result in a brief period of tooth sensitivity. The cleaning itself does not pose any problems. However, since tartar can conceal exposed roots and dentin, preventing hot or cold sensations from reaching the teeth, their removal restores these sensations. Fortunately, this sensitivity is typically temporary.
Fluoride Treatment and Fissure Sealants
For patients at higher risk of cavities or with sensitive teeth, we offer fluoride varnish applications to re-mineralize and strengthen your teeth, and fissure sealants to protect the deep fissures in molars. We also provide personalized hygiene recommendations based on your oral health and family or medical history.
